The thing worth joining for is decided months before you apply. Which is the whole reason to start in September.
A build day is a good evening. This is what it's an evening towards: GSoC, LFX and Outreachy — paid, competitive, and won by people maintainers already know. Our track is run by people who got in.
Program track
The GSoC/LFX prep cohort, with mentors who have been through it.
Aiming at GSoC, LFX or Outreachy, and not keen on writing the proposal the week it's due? Join six months early — for GSoC, that's autumn.
What week one looks like
Pick two target orgs. Two, because nobody reliably gets their first choice.
Read both contribution guides and build both codebases locally.
Find a small issue in each. Goal: a merged patch in both, so maintainers know your username by March.
Join the weekly cohort, where people read your proposal and tell it to you straight.
What you walk away with
Months of commits in two orgs before applications open, a proposal that's already been torn apart, and the mentors below — who were where you are a year ago.
The people you get
6 mentors, and every one of them got in.
6 organisations, no two the same
Your proposal gets torn apart by someone who wrote a winning one last March. And when the build breaks in week three, help is two floors away.
